About this book
What if one political meeting makes the life planned for you impossible to accept?
Jean Dunbarton has comfort, family connections, and an engagement to rising politician Geoffrey Stonor. Then curiosity draws her into a meeting about votes for women. In Elizabeth Robins’s The Convert, Jean encounters a cause that unsettles her familiar world and asks her to look beyond her own secure future.
Vida Levering, an experienced suffrage speaker, knows what it costs to stand before a crowd and demand change. Her plain arguments draw Jean toward questions that reach from drawing rooms to Parliament. As private loyalties meet public duty, the novel asks what one woman owes to others kept outside political power.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A play grows into a novel
Elizabeth Robins came to the suffrage cause after a career on the stage. She had been known in London for acting in the plays of Henrik Ibsen, which put strong, trapped women at the center of the drama. That training shows in The Convert. Scenes are built around speeches, confrontations and entrances, and people reveal themselves in what they say to one another.
In 1907 Robins wrote the play Votes for Women, and it was staged in London that spring. Audiences saw something unusual. A suffrage meeting was shown on stage, with a crowd and speakers, as part of a drama about real feeling. The same year she turned the material into a novel and gave it the title The Convert.
