About this book

What does art owe us—and what happens when writers and preachers forget the people they claim to understand?

In The Essays of "George Eliot", Mary Ann Evans brings a sharp, funny, often severe eye to art, religion, and society. This collection gathers prose from before and alongside her novels, including reviews and essays on German life, poetry, bad fiction, and the place of women. Her arguments keep returning to real people and the patience they deserve.

The Natural History of German Life asks how art can widen sympathy. Silly Novels by Lady Novelists takes aim at fiction that pretends to knowledge. Evangelical Teaching: Dr Cumming examines preaching without fellow feeling. Alongside these pieces, essays on women and social change reveal a writer testing what fair judgement demands, both on the page and in daily life.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1

Art should widen your sympathies

The best-known idea in the collection comes from The Natural History of German Life, an essay of 1856. Eliot starts from a book by the German writer Wilhelm Riehl, who studied peasants, townspeople and nobles by walking among them rather than theorising about them. She praises him for that. Her point is that we usually picture the common people as a crowd of types, either noble or brutish, and the picture is false.

What are the Essays of George Eliot about?

They cover art, religion, women's education, German life and social change. Eliot wrote most of them in the 1850s for the Westminster Review. Their common thread is that honest observation and sympathy should guide both art and moral judgement.

Why did Mary Ann Evans use the name George Eliot?

She chose a male pen name so that her fiction would be judged seriously and apart from gossip about her private life. Her essays came earlier and were often published without a signature, as was usual in the journals.

What is Silly Novels by Lady Novelists about?

It is a witty 1856 essay that mocks formula novels by women, with perfect heroines and fake learning. Eliot argues that women should write, but with real knowledge and higher standards.
