About this book

What good is a revolution if the people who win the streets still have nothing to eat?

In The Conquest of Bread, Peter Kropotkin puts food, shelter and clothing at the heart of political change. He argues that a revolution must meet ordinary needs immediately or risk losing the people it promises to help. His starting claim is bold: humanity already produces enough wealth to give everyone a comfortable life.

From that claim, Kropotkin builds a passionate case for a society without rulers. He asks how people might share resources, organise work and feed cities through free agreement. He challenges wages, including wages set by workers, and tackles a stubborn question: if everyone has enough to live on, why would anyone work?

Humanity Already Has Enough for Everyone

Kropotkin opens with a claim about wealth. Every house, railway, field and machine, he says, is the work of countless people over many generations. Cities were built by diggers, miners, carpenters and engineers who are long dead. No living owner can honestly say that he alone made what he holds.

What is The Conquest of Bread about?

It argues that a revolution must first secure food, housing and clothing for everyone. Kropotkin proposes common ownership, free sharing of necessities, voluntary groups instead of government, and shorter, pleasant work for all.

What does anarchist communism mean in Kropotkin's book?

It means a society with no state and no private ownership of land or factories, where people work by free agreement and take what they need from the common store, without wages or money.

When was The Conquest of Bread written and is it still relevant?

It was published in French in 1892 and in English in 1906, drawn from earlier newspaper articles. Its questions about basic needs, shared ownership and work still appear in modern debates on welfare and cooperatives.
