About this book
How do you enter a Bible whose sentences ask you to listen?
The Bible, Douay-Rheims, Complete gathers the Old and New Testaments as the Catholic Church receives them. Genesis opens with creation, Adam and Eve, and Noe and the flood. From Genesis to Deuteronomy, the text explores origins and law; the historical books follow a nation's rise and fall.
Other sections turn toward suffering, prayer, warning, and hope. Job presents a good man who loses his children, wealth, and health. The four Gospels offer portraits of Jesus, followed by Acts, the letters, and the Apocalypse. Catholic readers have used this Bible for both study and prayer, finding words for devotion in its psalms.

In short
The Douay-Rheims Bible is the Catholic Bible in English. It holds the whole of Christian scripture as the Catholic Church receives it: forty-six books of the Old Testament and twenty-seven of the New.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
Exiles made an English Bible abroad
The Douay-Rheims Bible began in exile. In 1568 William Allen, an Oxford scholar who had left England, founded an English College at Douai. Its purpose was to train priests who could return to a country where the Catholic faith was under pressure. These men needed a Bible in their own language, and they needed one that matched the Latin text the Church read.
The college moved to Rheims in 1578 and came back to Douai in 1593. That is why the Bible carries two town names. The New Testament was printed at Rheims in 1582. The Old Testament was printed at Douay in two volumes, in 1609 and 1610, though the work on it had been finished much earlier. Money problems delayed the printing for years.

What is the Douay-Rheims Bible?
It is a Catholic English Bible made from the Latin Vulgate by English exiles in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. Bishop Richard Challoner revised it in the eighteenth century, and his version is the one most often printed.
Why is it called Douay-Rheims?
The name comes from two French towns. The New Testament was printed at Rheims in 1582, and the Old Testament at Douay in 1609 and 1610, where the English College of exiled Catholic priests was based.
What is the difference between the Douay-Rheims and the King James Bible?
The Douay-Rheims follows the Latin Vulgate and includes seventy-three books. The King James Bible was made from Hebrew and Greek, and the usual modern printing has sixty-six books, though the original also carried an Apocrypha section. Their wording and book names differ in many places.
