About this book
What if the wanted criminal understands the mystery before the police do?
Arsène Lupin lives on the wrong side of the law, but he makes detection part of his mischief. In Maurice Leblanc’s The Confessions of Arsène Lupin, the gentleman thief uses charm, disguise, and sharp observation to outwit opponents. His nerve matters, but so does his skill at shaping what other people believe.
These short crime stories move from case to case, rather than tell a steady account of Lupin’s life. An object, a gesture, or a misleading account can turn an investigation in the wrong direction. The police pursue him, giving this proud, inventive criminal someone to measure himself against—and making each contest a test of perception.

In short
Imagine sitting in your study while a friend dictates a string of numbers, and the numbers come from flashes of sunlight on a house across the street. That is how The Confessions of Arsène Lupin begins.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A flash of sunlight opens a murder case
The first tale, Two Hundred Thousand Francs Reward, opens in the narrator's study. Lupin lies half asleep on the sofa, then dictates a string of numbers. The narrator sees that they match flashes of light bouncing off the house across the street.
When the numbers become letters, an English sentence appears. It urges caution, is full of odd spelling mistakes and stops in the middle of a phrase. To Lupin the broken ending matters most, because the sender was caught before he could finish. The flashes come from a pocket mirror in a nearby flat, where the two men find Lavernoux, agent of Baron Repstein, dead from a tiny wound over the heart.

What is The Confessions of Arsène Lupin about?
It is a collection of ten short adventures in which the gentleman thief Arsène Lupin tells a friend how he solved puzzles, rescued people in danger and outwitted Inspector Ganimard, using disguise, ciphers and quick thinking.
Who is Ganimard in the Lupin stories?
Ganimard is the chief inspector of the Paris Criminal Investigation Department. He is brave, stubborn and honest, and he spends the book chasing Lupin, who both teases him and admires him.
Do I need to read other Lupin books first?
No. Each of the ten tales stands alone, and the opening chapter introduces Lupin and his friend who writes the stories. Fans may notice a few mentions of other adventures, but nothing depends on them.
