About this book

A vow points toward Rome, but mountains, bad weather and sore feet refuse to follow a straight line.

In The Path to Rome, Hilaire Belloc sets out from Toul in eastern France to keep a promise: to reach Rome on foot, as directly as he can. Toul holds memories of his army service. Ahead lie wooded hills, rivers and mountain ridges that turn a simple rule into a hard daily test.

Belloc walks as a poet, historian and Catholic, with an eye for the land and plenty to say. He chats, grumbles and jokes as the road leads through the Vosges and Jura toward the Alps. Beneath the adventure runs his belief that Rome and the Catholic Church shape Europe's shared civilisation.

What you’ll discover

  • A promise under pressure Follow a determined walker as the most direct route becomes anything but easy.

A vow turns a map into a road

Belloc begins with a promise. He had vowed that he would go to Rome on foot, and he meant to go by the most direct line he could manage. To plan it, he drew a straight line on a map between his starting place and the city. The line would pass through France, Switzerland and Italy, and he would try to keep close to it.

What is The Path to Rome about?

It is Hilaire Belloc's account of walking from Toul in France to Rome in 1901 to keep a vow. It mixes travel, humour, history and religious feeling as he crosses mountains and plains.

Is The Path to Rome a true story?

Yes, it is based on Belloc's real walk in 1901, published in 1902. He wrote it in a playful, loose style with digressions and jokes, so it reads more like a personal tale than a strict record.

He had made a vow to go to Rome on foot. As a Catholic, he saw the city as the centre of his faith, and the walk was a way of keeping his promise and seeing Europe slowly.
