About this book

What happens when the person who knows you best becomes the person you no longer know how to face?

On the Brittany coast, two families return to their neighboring summer houses. Phil, sixteen, and Vinca, fifteen, have grown up together among shrimping nets, wet sand and sea light. Now their familiar closeness begins to change. Phil sees Vinca differently, while she hides old feelings and fresh hurt behind a calm face. Neither knows how to meet the change.

Then the Lady in White, an elegant older woman living nearby, draws Phil’s curiosity. Between his tenderness for Vinca and the pull of this stranger, desire brings jealousy, guilt and confusion. In Ripening Seed, Colette watches the end of innocence without sentimentality. The parents still see children; the young people struggle with feelings that make their old ease impossible.

Two families share one summer

The story opens on the Brittany coast, where two families spend every summer in rented houses close together. Phil and Vinca have grown up as neighbors and playmates. Their parents are friends, and the grown-ups treat the two children almost as brother and sister. Nobody has noticed, or nobody will say, that this has stopped being true.
