About this book
What happens when a traveller’s knowledge of distant cultures meets the prejudices he carries with him?
The Jew, The Gypsy and El Islam gathers three studies by Richard Francis Burton, the Victorian explorer, soldier, linguist and consul. His subjects are Jews, Roma and Islam. Across these pages, years of travel and language study meet the strong opinions of a man whose curiosity does not free him from prejudice.
The collection offers a record of how one learned and opinionated Victorian sees these peoples. The Jew backs a charge historians have long rejected. The Gypsy approaches Roma through Romani and kinship. El Islam draws on Burton’s study of Muslim law and practice, alongside his experience of pilgrimage in disguise.

In short
What happens when a famous explorer turns his notebooks into judgments about other peoples? Sir Richard Francis Burton was a traveler, a linguist and, for a time, British consul at Damascus.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A consul's notebooks become one three part book
Burton spent his life crossing borders. He learned many languages, entered Mecca in disguise, and served as consul at Damascus, where Muslims, Christians and Jews lived side by side.
Some pages give his own observations, such as a night in a Gypsy camp near Piracicaba in Brazil. Other pages are long quotations from travelers, consuls and scholars. The Gypsy section is a work of comparison, and the Islam essay is a plea for fairness. The Jewish section is something else, and it needs care.

What is The Jew, The Gypsy and El Islam about?
It collects three studies by Richard Burton. One describes Jews in Europe and the Holy Land, one traces the Gypsies from India across Europe, Africa and Brazil, and one defends Islam against what he calls four Western errors about it.
Are the claims about Jews in the book true?
No. The charges of ritual murder and the Talmud passages that the study repeats have been shown by historians to be false or distorted. The section is useful as a record of Victorian prejudice and of the sources that spread it.
Where did the Gypsies come from according to Burton?
He argues they came from India, as the last wave of an Aryan migration west, and that they are kin to the Jats of the Indus valley. Later research confirms the Indian origin, while the exact link to the Jats remains a theory.
