About this book
What does order cost when power claims the right to decide everything?
The Revolt of Mankind is a three-act drama by Finnish writer Lauri Haarla. Its central concerns are power, rebellion and the human cost of absolute control. The stakes lie in the tension between obedience and revolt: what people surrender to authority, and what resistance may demand of them.
Haarla's play belongs to the theatre of the early twentieth century, an age of upheaval in Finland and Europe. Speech is your way into its questions. Attend to how authority speaks and how those beneath it answer. The drama invites you to consider the price of order, rather than take its value for granted.

In short
The Revolt of Mankind is a three-act play by the Finnish writer Lauri Haarla, set at the start of the third millennium. Its central figure is Huggs, a trust magnate who has bought so much of the earth that he can say he is the state.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
Huggs rules the world from his tower
The play opens in a round study with no windows and a glass dome for a ceiling. Huggs, a thin man of about fifty, sits at his desk. Behind a black curtain is a small shrine with the painting of a young woman, and every morning he kneels there and scatters green branches and red flowers on her altar. Nobody may enter while he prays, and the first sign that his house is troubled is his wife Bertha walking in anyway.
Bertha is bitter. She complains that their son Ernst has come home sick and gloomy, and that Huggs keeps no picture of Ernst or of their daughter Gertrud on his desk. All his love goes to Robert, the son of the dead actress in the painting. Huggs answers that one mind and one world is the harmony of the age, and that Robert will one day be able to say that he owns the world.
