About this book
What if the qualities people praise in God reveal their deepest hopes for themselves?
In The Essence of Christianity, Ludwig Feuerbach asks where religion comes from and what it reveals about human nature. His answer turns a familiar belief around: he argues that humans make God in their own image. Wisdom, goodness, love and power become, in his account, human qualities placed outside ourselves and worshipped as divine.
Feuerbach tests this idea against Christian teachings, from the incarnation and the Trinity to prayer, miracles and the hope of heaven. He asks what needs and wishes each teaching expresses. His purpose is not to mock believers, but to reclaim what he sees as their own human treasure. The question reaches beyond belief: how might people understand and care for one another?

In short
The Essence of Christianity is a book by the German philosopher Ludwig Feuerbach. It first appeared in 1841, when he was in his thirties.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
Religion begins in human self-awareness
Feuerbach starts with a simple observation. Humans, unlike animals, can take their own nature as an object of thought. An animal lives its life, but a person can ask what a person is. This power of self-awareness, he says, is the root of religion.
What do we find when we look at ourselves? Feuerbach names three powers that make up the human essence. They are reason, will and heart. Reason lets us know. Will lets us choose and act. The heart, meaning feeling and love, lets us bind ourselves to others. These powers, he argues, are not tools we use for some other aim. They are ends in themselves, and they are what makes us human.

What is The Essence of Christianity about?
It argues that God is a projection of human nature. Feuerbach goes through Christian teachings such as the incarnation, the Trinity and prayer, and claims each one expresses human needs, hopes and qualities in the form of belief in a divine being.
What does Feuerbach mean by projection?
Projection means that humans take their own best qualities, such as reason, will and love, and place them in an imagined being outside themselves. People then worship that being and forget that its traits came from human nature.
Was Feuerbach an atheist?
His book treats God as a human creation, so most readers call his view atheist, though he saw himself as rescuing the true meaning of religion. He hoped love of humanity would take the place of worship of a separate God.
