About this book

Who can you trust when the tavern that feels like home stands among sailors, rogues and danger?

In Arthur Morrison’s The Hole in the Wall, life gathers around a waterfront public house near the Thames. A young boy grows up among its regulars, learning from sailors, landlords and rogues. Docks, ships and crowded East End streets shape the world he knows, where work and trouble arrive with the river trade.

Then crime threatens the people he cares about, and loyalty becomes more than a comforting word. What does he owe those around him, and whom should he trust? Morrison brings an observant eye to this rough company, weaving a crime story with a young person’s lessons in courage, caution and survival. The setting matters as much as the danger.

The Thames waterfront is the true setting

Morrison builds his novel on a real kind of place, the crowded streets beside the Thames where the river trade meets the poor neighbourhoods of the East End. Ships come and go, and the people who live nearby depend on them for work, news and trouble. The public house of the title sits in the middle of this world.
