About this book

Who commands a hive when even its queen is not the ruler we imagine?

In The Life of the Bee, Maurice Maeterlinck follows a honeybee colony through its year. Guards watch the entrance. A swarm leaves a thriving hive. Workers build wax cells, and new queens emerge. Drawing on his own hives and the work of earlier observers, he brings you close to creatures whose shared life raises questions about nature, work and fate.

This long essay joins close observation with gentle philosophy. Maeterlinck describes what the bees do, then pauses to ask what their actions mean. His idea of the spirit of the hive gives those questions a focus. He admits where knowledge falls short, too. Some claims are now outdated, but his calm attention offers a thoughtful way to look at small lives.

What you’ll discover

  • The mystery of command Explore how a colony runs, and why its queen is not its ruler.

In short

The Life of the Bee is an essay on the honeybee, written by the Belgian author Maurice Maeterlinck and published in French in 1901. He kept hives himself and read the great students of bees before him, such as Swammerdam, Réaumur and the blind observer François Huber.

The hive is ruled by a spirit

Maeterlinck begins with a puzzle. Who commands a hive of thousands of bees? Most people say the queen. He says no. The queen does not give orders, and no single bee does either.

What is The Life of the Bee about?

It describes the year of a honeybee colony, from the swarm and the building of wax to the birth of queens and the removal of drones, and it reflects on what the hive means for nature and human life.

What is the spirit of the hive?

It is Maeterlinck's name for the shared will that guides the colony. No single bee, not even the queen, gives orders. The hive acts as one body, and its choices seem to come from the whole.

Is The Life of the Bee scientifically accurate?

Partly. Maeterlinck drew on careful observers and his own hives, but the book dates from 1901. Later research, such as work on bee dances, corrected or added to some points, and he often reads human feelings into the bees.
