About this book

What if wisdom means learning to hold a belief without gripping it?

The Diamond Sutra (Chin-Kang-Ching) is a short scripture of the Mahayana Buddhist tradition. In its opening scene, the Buddha stays at Jeta Grove near Shravasti, and his senior disciple Subhuti asks how to steady the mind. Their conversation explores what it means to help others, give, and teach without clinging to what we think we know.

Traditionally received as the words of the Buddha, this text belongs to the Perfection of Wisdom literature. Its Sanskrit title includes the words Diamond Cutter: an image of wisdom cutting through illusion. Through a looping pattern of saying and unsaying, the dialogue tests what can be held firmly—even teachings themselves.

What you’ll discover

  • A question about stillness Begin with Subhuti’s question about steadying the mind in the quiet setting of Jeta Grove.

  • Wisdom that cuts Meet the central image of diamond-like wisdom and its power, within the text, to cut illusion.

Subhuti asks how to steady the mind

The sutra opens in a quiet scene. The Buddha is staying at Jeta Grove near the city of Shravasti. He goes out to beg for food with his monks, returns, eats, washes his feet, and sits down. Nothing about this opening is grand, and tradition reads the ordinary routine as part of the lesson.

What is the Diamond Sutra about?

It records a talk between the Buddha and his disciple Subhuti on how a bodhisattva should live. Its main teaching is that all things are empty of fixed self, so one should act with compassion without clinging.

Why is it called the Diamond Sutra?

The Sanskrit title includes the words Diamond Cutter. A diamond cuts through hard stone, and in the same way the wisdom taught here is said to cut through illusion and mistaken ideas about the self and the world.

What does emptiness mean in the Diamond Sutra?

Emptiness does not mean nothing exists. It means that people and things have no fixed, separate nature of their own. Because they depend on conditions and labels, clinging to them as permanent causes suffering.
