About this book
Step from a battlefield into a Grail quest, then sit down at an Elizabethan kitchen table.
Chronicle and Romance brings together The Chronicles of Froissart, Malory's Holy Grail, and Harrison's Description of England. Jean Froissart follows the wars between England and France through battles and courts. His account praises knightly courage, but glory shares the page with cruelty, and ordinary people enter a world ruled by nobles.
Thomas Malory sends King Arthur's knights in search of the Holy Grail, where adventures become spiritual tests within the romance. William Harrison turns to the lives of his countrymen: what they eat, wear, and build. Together, these writers offer distinct ways into the English past, from noble deeds to daily comforts.
What you’ll discover
- War as knightly pageant Follow Froissart through courts and conflicts where noble deeds demand remembrance.

Froissart writes war as knightly pageant
Jean Froissart wrote his Chronicles to preserve the deeds of the Hundred Years War, the long struggle between the kings of England and France. He came from the region of Hainault, served in noble households, and travelled to courts in England, Scotland and elsewhere. He wrote for patrons who loved tales of arms, and he said he wanted brave deeds to be remembered by later ages.
His method was to gather what he could from those who were there. He talked with knights, heralds and soldiers, then shaped their memories into flowing narrative. That gives the book a lively, personal feel, as if you are listening to old campaigners at a fireside. It also means that his sources shape his story, and that great lords loom larger than the common men who fought beside them.

What is Chronicle and Romance about?
It collects three English-language works: selections from Froissart's chronicles of the Hundred Years War, the Holy Grail section of Malory's Arthurian tales, and Harrison's description of daily life in Elizabethan England.
Is Froissart's Chronicles a true story?
It is a real history of the fourteenth century based on interviews and reports, so it records actual wars and people. It also reflects the views of noble patrons and sometimes favours knightly heroes over common people.
What is the Holy Grail in Malory?
In the legend, the Grail is a sacred vessel tied to the Last Supper. In Malory, Arthur's knights vow to seek it, and the quest tests their spiritual worth as well as their skill in arms.
