About this book
What if being sensible is no help in a world where even time refuses to behave?
Alice is bored on the riverbank until a worried White Rabbit with a pocket watch catches her eye. She follows him down a hole into Wonderland, where cakes change her size and ordinary rules fall apart. Curious, polite and determined to make sense of things, she faces creatures who turn even a simple conversation into a puzzle.
In Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, a grinning Cheshire Cat offers odd directions, the Caterpillar questions who Alice is, and the Hatter’s tea party never ends. Beneath these funny encounters lies a child’s struggle with grown-ups who make little sense. Wordplay, riddles and shifting meanings keep Alice—and you—wondering what anyone can take for granted.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
Curiosity sends Alice tumbling down the rabbit hole
The story opens on a riverbank. Alice sits beside her sister, bored, because her sister's book has no pictures or conversations in it. Then a White Rabbit with pink eyes hurries past, muttering that he will be late.
A talking rabbit does not shock her. A rabbit with a waistcoat pocket and a watch does. Burning with curiosity, Alice follows him into a large hole under the hedge, without once asking how she will get out again.

What is Alice's Adventures in Wonderland about?
A girl named Alice falls down a rabbit hole while chasing a White Rabbit and wanders through a strange land. She changes size, meets odd creatures, plays croquet with a furious Queen, and tries to reach a lovely garden.
Who wrote Alice in Wonderland and when was it published?
Lewis Carroll wrote it. That is the pen name of Charles Dodgson, who taught mathematics at Oxford. The book appeared in 1865 and was followed by a sequel, Through the Looking-Glass.
What does the Cheshire Cat mean when it says everyone is mad?
The Cat tells Alice that everyone there is mad, including Alice herself, because otherwise she would not have come there. It argues that it is mad because it growls when pleased, which sets the playful tone of the book's logic.
