Readers who love Gothic suspense, eerie voices in the night, and puzzles about what the senses can be trusted to tell us. It also suits anyone curious about early American fiction.

Worum es in diesem Buch geht

Picture a small temple on a rock above the Schuylkill River near Philadelphia. Twelve columns hold up a dome, and each midnight a man climbs there alone to pray. One night a light flashes, a blast rings out, and he is found burned and dying. How can a still night bring such a death?

Wieland; or, The Transformation appeared in 1798, the work of Charles Brockden Brown, an American novelist who wanted to show how the mind can be led astray. A dusty book sends a clerk toward lonely faith

Clara's father is a young clerk in London, apprenticed to a harsh merchant. He has no time for rest and no taste for books. He feels a vague hunger that nothing around him can feed.

One Sunday he opens a dusty volume in his attic, and a single line catches his eye. He reads until the light fails, then turns to the Bible and takes its verses one at a time, each standing alone. Soon he lives under a strict inner watch. He believes he must carry the gospel to the native peoples of North America. He sails for Philadelphia, loses his nerve, and buys a farm on the Schuylkill instead.

Back home he joins no church, because he thinks true worship must be silent and solitary. On a rock near his house he builds a small temple, a dome on twelve columns, and prays there at noon and at midnight. Then he says he once put off a command from God, and that a strange punishment now waits for him. Faith built on one private reading can harden into a belief that no one around it can test.

That’s 1 of 10 key points.
