Uncle Tom’s Cabin, Chapter 6 summary

What happens

1. Andy discovers Eliza’s empty room, and Mrs. Shelby welcomes the news while her husband worries that Haley might question his honor.
2. Haley angrily challenges Mr. Shelby, who denies helping Eliza and offers horses and servants for the pursuit.
3. Sam hopes to gain from Tom’s changed position, but Andy explains that Mrs. Shelby wants Eliza’s child to escape Haley.
4. Sam hides a sharp nut beneath Haley’s saddle and arranges with Andy to release the other horses.
5. The horses escape amid shouting, and Sam prevents their capture until about noon.
6. Mrs. Shelby persuades Haley to remain for dinner, while Sam and Andy privately celebrate their successful delay.
