What happens
- Toad wakes in a hollow tree and gains passage on a barge by pretending to be a washerwoman visiting her daughter.
- His failed washing exposes his lies, and the barge-woman throws him into the canal.
- Toad steals her horse, then sells it to a gypsy for six shillings and sixpence and a filling breakfast.
- The owners of the car he steals mistake him for a distressed washerwoman and kindly give him a lift.
- Allowed to drive, Toad speeds, reveals his identity, crashes into a pond, and escapes across the fields.
- Pursued by the driver and policemen, Toad falls into the river and reaches a hole where the Water Rat appears.
