Chapter 9 of 25 · 8 min to read the chapter
In Chapter 9, the governess finds comfort in the children's affection and talents, although she suspects hidden agreements and postpones finding another school for Miles. During a late night of reading, she leaves her room and encounters Quint on the staircase, where she faces him without terror until he turns and disappears.
What happens
- Several quiet days soften the governess's alarm, while the children's increased affection both comforts her and raises suspicions.
- The children entertain her with performances and music, and Miles's brilliance helps her postpone the question of another school.
- She suspects that the children sometimes arrange for one to distract her while the other slips away.
- Reading late at night, she senses a disturbance, takes a candle, and locks her room behind her.
- Near the staircase window, her candle goes out, and the early morning light reveals Quint on the landing.
- She meets his silent stare without terror and watches him turn, descend, and vanish beyond the next bend.
