The Turn of the Screw, Chapter 13 summary
Chapter 13 of 25 · 8 min to read the chapter
In Chapter 13, the governess spends a month avoiding direct questions about Quint and Miss Jessel while becoming more convinced that Miles and Flora secretly encounter them. Although she sees no further apparitions, ordinary silences increase her fear, and the children’s questions about their absent uncle expose another subject she finds difficult.
What happens
- The governess believes the children deliberately steer conversation away from dead friends and toward stories about her own life.
- Autumn settles over Bly, and no new apparition appears, but the governess fears losing the ability to see what threatens the children.
- She suspects invisible visitors share their company and privately rehearses confrontations, yet cannot bring herself to name Quint and Miss Jessel.
- The children interrupt uncomfortable moments with affection and questions about their uncle, whose arrival the governess finds troubling.
- She keeps their letters instead of sending them and closes by announcing an abrupt change without describing it.
