Worum es in diesem Buch geht
A buck bolts across a snowy mountain road on Christmas Eve. A judge fires twice and misses, two rifles answer from the pines, and the deer drops. Then a stranger opens his coat to show the judge his bleeding wound.
That scene opens The Pioneers, published in 1823 by James Fenimore Cooper. He grew up beside Otsego Lake in central New York, where the Susquehanna begins, and he built the book from his memories of that valley. It is set in the 1790s, as settlers chop a village out of the forest, and it introduces Natty Bumppo, an old hunter who has had the hills to himself for forty years. You get village comedy, a panther attack, a courtroom and a mystery.

A shot in the snow ties strangers together
The book opens near sunset on a cold December day. Judge Marmaduke Temple rides home in a sleigh with his daughter Elizabeth, back after five years at school. Hounds howl in the hills, and the Judge jumps out with his shotgun, eager for a deer.
A buck races across the road. The Judge fires twice and misses. Then two sharper rifle shots ring out and the animal drops. Out of the pines step Natty Bumppo, an old hunter called Leather-Stocking for his leggings, and a young man who says the kill is his. The young man asks only to count the bullets. He finds four in a pine tree and then opens his coat to show that the fifth is in his own shoulder.
The Judge is horrified and offers him care and a home. The young man refuses until Elizabeth begs him to come. A small accident starts a mystery that runs through the whole book.
That’s 1 of 10 key points.
