The Odyssey, Book 8 summary

Book 8 of 24 · 21 min to read the book

In Book 8, Alcinous arranges an escort and entertainment for Ulysses, who answers an insult with a winning discus throw and receives generous gifts. Demodocus’s songs about Troy make Ulysses weep, prompting Alcinous to stop the performance and ask the stranger for his name, homeland, travels, and reasons for sorrow.

What happens

  1. Alcinous orders a ship prepared for the stranger and gathers the Phaeacians for a feast, where Demodocus’s song makes Ulysses weep.
  2. At the games, Euryalus insults Ulysses, who throws a heavy discus beyond every previous mark and challenges the other athletes.
  3. Alcinous turns to dancing, and Demodocus sings about Vulcan trapping Mars and Venus together.
  4. The Phaeacians give Ulysses clothing and gold, Euryalus apologizes with a sword, and Arete packs the gifts securely.
  5. After bathing and thanking Nausicaa, Ulysses honors Demodocus and requests a song about the wooden horse and Troy’s destruction.
  6. Ulysses weeps again, and Alcinous stops the song to ask his identity, destination, and connection to the suffering at Troy.
