Für wen es gedacht ist

You will enjoy this book if you like Victorian domestic comedy that grows into adventure, or stories where love, duty and conscience pull apart.

Worum es in diesem Buch geht

Picture a June Sunday in 1886 in the English village of Tilehurst. A young preacher called John Baines has just given his farewell sermon before leaving for Africa. His fiancée, Lucy Josling, waits in the sun outside the chapel, hot, polite and already a little unsure of what she has promised.

The Man Who Did the Right Thing is a novel by Harry Johnston, an explorer and colonial official who knew East Africa at first hand. He wrote it mainly in 1920, and says its central idea rests partly on real events. It is a romance with a sharp eye for church people, civil servants and ambitious women. You get a wide stage, and a woman and two men whose choices pull against each other.

A Sunday dinner shows a household of quiet cruelty

The story opens in the last week of June 1886 at Tilehurst in Berkshire. John Baines has preached his farewell sermon, and Lucy Josling, a schoolteacher of twenty-four, has come to spend the day with his family. She is pretty, bookish and curious about the wide world. She has agreed to follow John to Africa and marry him there.

John is a kind, simple young man with a good appetite. His mother, Sarah, is gaunt, devout and cold, and her only tender feeling is for her son. She resents Lucy because John has chosen her, and because Lucy belongs to the Church of England while the Baineses are Chapel.

The Sunday dinner is a small battle. Mrs. Baines serves everything and answers Lucy in snaps. When Lucy asks about the morning train, she is told that the Lord's Day leaves no room for timetables. After the young pair slip out for a walk, his mother opens her Bible and reads the same verses again and again without taking them in.

Her anger is love with nowhere to go. Strict faith can hide a love that has no way to speak.

That’s 1 of 10 key points.
