Für wen es gedacht ist

This book is for readers who love nature writing and the lives of self-taught scientists. It is for anyone who has watched an ant or a wasp for ten minutes and wondered what it was doing.

Worum es in diesem Buch geht

What do you see the sun with, your eyes or your mouth? A small boy on a bare hillside in Rouergue tests the question for himself. He opens his mouth and shuts his eyes, then opens his eyes and shuts his mouth, and he settles it by deduction.

The boy is Jean-Henri Fabre, and this is his life, written in 1910 by Augustin Fabre, a priest from the same corner of Aveyron. You meet a farm child, a self-taught schoolmaster, a professor driven from his post in 1870, and a hermit with a stony garden full of wasps.

A farm child discovers the sun and the grasshopper

Jean-Henri Fabre was baptized at Saint-Léons in 1823. His family was poor, so he was sent as a small child to his grandparents at Malaval, on the cold granite plateau of Rouergue. Among geese, calves and sheep, he says, his mind first woke.

His grandparents could not read, and neither gave a glance to insects. Yet the observer was already forming. One dusk he heard a jingling in the broom and thought a bird was singing. He crouched in ambush for days and caught the singer, a grasshopper. His reward was a poor meal, but he had learned by his own watching.

Augustin Fabre notes that heredity does not explain this child, for no one around him cared for such things. The taste showed itself early, in play and in patience.

Childhood wonder is a first kind of science, and it needs only time and attention.

That’s 1 of 10 key points.

Questions about Das Leben Jean Henri Fabres, des Entomologen

What is The Life of Jean Henri Fabre about?

It follows the entomologist Jean-Henri Fabre from his poor childhood in Rouergue through teaching, study and struggle to his long years as a hermit naturalist at Sérignan, using his own memories, letters and tributes.

Who was Jean-Henri Fabre?

He was a French naturalist born in 1823, known for his ten volumes of Souvenirs Entomologiques, which describe the habits and instincts of wasps, bees, beetles, spiders and scorpions with the care of an observer and the voice of a poet.

What is a harmas in this book?

A harmas is the local Provençal word for an untilled stony stretch of ground covered in thyme. Fabre bought one at Sérignan and turned it into his open-air laboratory, teeming with bees, wasps and beetles.

Who wrote this biography and why?

Augustin Fabre, a priest from the same part of Aveyron, wrote it in 1910 as newspaper articles for the jubilee celebrations at Sérignan, to honor the naturalist and restore him to his native countryside.

What is the main message of the book?

It shows that patient observation, hard work and wonder can lift a poor, self-taught boy to scientific distinction, and that close study of the smallest creatures can raise the largest questions about life and order.
