Für wen es gedacht ist

Readers who love a romance with a spirited heroine, a road trip through Scottish history, castles and glens, and a sparkling mix of fairy-tale talk, travel and matters of the heart.

Worum es in diesem Buch geht

The Heather-Moon is a romantic novel by C. N. Williamson and A. M. Williamson, the husband and wife team who wrote many motoring romances in the early twentieth century. It follows Barrie MacDonald, an eighteen-year-old raised in a stern house near Carlisle, who learns one August day that her mother is alive and acts on the stage. You get a girl's first taste of freedom, a motor tour through Scotland, and a tangle of hearts.

Barrie runs away to find her mother. At the Carlisle railway station she meets a man who calls himself Somerled, a famous painter and millionaire who was born on the same Scottish island as her father's family. He takes her under his wing, and the book becomes a journey over the border through castles, abbeys, battlefields and the homes of poets, all under the new August moon that Barrie calls the heather moon.

The story is told in several voices: a narrator, Barrie's own journal, the notes of a novelist named Basil Norman, and Barrie's letters. Each shows the same events from a different side. Let us start with the attic at Hillard House, where a door left unlocked changes everything.

A forbidden attic and a hidden mother

The story opens at Hillard House, a grim home where the road meets the moors near Carlisle. Barrie, eighteen, lives there with her stern grandmother, Mrs. MacDonald, a governess named Miss Hepburn and a housekeeper, Mrs. Muir. Romance is forbidden in this house, so Barrie feeds her hunger for it by peeping through the keyhole of the locked attic door and calling the gold dust she sees fairy gold.

One morning Mrs. Muir forgets to lock the door. Barrie slips up the creaking stairs into a vast attic full of trunks, old furniture and banished books. The air smells of spices, dust and old leather, and she feels perfectly happy for the first time.

In a far corner, hidden behind a barricade of clutter, she finds a set of pale blue satin furniture. She guesses at once that it belonged to her mother, a woman nobody will talk about. Her whole life she has known only that her father died when she was small and that her grandmother hates the memory of the woman he married.

The attic is the first doorway in the book. It shows how the girl has been starved of beauty and truth, and why she will leap at the first chance to run toward both.

She does not yet know that this one open door will send her across a whole country.

That’s 1 of 10 key points.
