In Chapter 11, Anzacs rescue the Stonewalls from a German attack, and Kentucky carries an urgent message when machine guns stop their renewed advance toward a village. He helps an artillery observer locate the guns, but returns to find no visible assault after the barrage lifts, leaving him bewildered as German fire resumes.
What happens
- Anzac reinforcements bring machine guns into the defenders’ shell holes and help drive back the German attack.
- The Stonewalls regroup without news of Larry Arundel, then advance toward a village until flanking machine guns force them into cover.
- A wounded officer sends Kentucky to an artillery observation post to identify the machine guns holding up the advance.
- Kentucky locates the concealed observer, points out the target, and watches artillery fire adjusted onto the German trench.
- Enemy bullets and shells strike the observation post while the officer requests heavier guns and continues directing fire.
- Kentucky returns as the barrage lifts, but sees no Stonewalls attack before German machine guns resume firing.
