Für wen es gedacht ist

You will enjoy this if you like gentleman crooks, ingenious thefts, secret passwords and chases by night, or grand hotels and sleeping cars in postwar Europe.

Worum es in diesem Buch geht

What would you do if a stranger hired you in under three minutes, asked whether you can sing, and then handed you a locked suitcase that weighs far too much for papers? That is how George Hargreave starts a new life. He is a former army officer with a small gratuity and no prospects.

The Golden Face is a crime adventure by William Le Queux, written just after the Great War. Hargreave tells it himself, as a confession to clear his conscience. His employer, Rudolph Rayne, is a charming Yorkshire squire who secretly runs the best organized gang of thieves in Europe. You get heists, disguises and narrow escapes from Paris to Sofia, and a quiet question beneath them. Can an honest man find a way out?

A strange job and a heavy suitcase

George Hargreave leaves the army after the Armistice with a small gratuity and no work. An advertisement in The Times asks for a gentleman who can drive and speak languages. He meets the advertiser, Rudolph Rayne, in a West End hotel.

Hargreave is to bring a small locked suitcase to King's Cross the next day. At Overstow Hall in Yorkshire he notices Rayne's dark-eyed daughter Lola, who watches him closely.

Rayne sends him to Paris with the suitcase, to hand it only to a Monsieur Duperré. Later an unsigned note from Lola reaches him at Rouen. It tells him to get rid of the case at once. He remembers how heavy it is, and he begins to suspect that he carries stolen goods.

Rayne's offer of six hundred pounds a year after asking only about singing and driving is a warning in itself.

That’s 1 of 10 key points.
