The Foundling Girl of Milan is a romantic novel by Carolina Invernizio, who died in 1916. She wrote it for three sisters, the daughters of a printer, and hoped it would bring them a tear. It is set in 1866, eighteen years after the Five Days, when Milan drove out the Austrian army. You will meet Maria the glove maker, the rich countess Adriana, the secretive Count Patta, and the Marquis Diego Tiani, who borrows other people's names.

A masked stranger shelters in a glove shop
The book opens at midnight on the last day of Carnival, in a glove shop on the Corso di Porta Vittoria. Maria, the young glove maker, has just put up the shutters. Many men come to her counter only to whisper a compliment. She smiles at all of them and encourages none, so her good name has never suffered a stain.
Then a masked figure in a black domino cloak bursts in and begs her to hide him. Maria nearly calls for help. But he drops his mask, and the face beneath is so charming, with jet-black eyes and blond curls, that she bolts the door. He says only that an enemy is searching the streets.
She offers to lend him one of her dresses, so that he can walk out as a woman in a city full of costumes. Alone for a moment, the stranger shows another face. His eyes turn hard and cruel, and he mutters that he wants a certain man dead before that man can possess a girl named Adriana. Maria sees none of this.
At the door he kisses her and runs off into the dark. By dawn Maria is pale and sleepless, asking who he was and whether she will see him again. One kindness to a stranger at midnight sets off a chain that Maria cannot stop.
That’s 1 of 8 key points.
