In Chapter 48, Soames visits Irene after twelve years apart, seeking information that could support a divorce, but she denies having anyone else in her life. The meeting leaves him without useful evidence and unsettles his confidence, as her resistance revives both his desire for her and his belief that marriage gives him authority.
What happens
- After dinner and wine, Soames visits Irene's flat and uses his surname to make her expect Jolyon.

- When Soames asserts their marriage, Irene opens a window and explains the gesture as habit.
- Irene challenges his complaints about their marriage and asks him to leave; a china bowl recalls their shared past.
- After a brief handshake, Soames walks away shaken by his continuing attraction and the failure of his visit.
- A newspaper headline about rejected authority prompts Soames to compare Irene's resistance with the Boers.
