The Forsyte Saga – Complete, Chapter 103 summary

Chapter 103 of 116 · Part 3 · 14 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 103, Jolyon Forsyte takes Irene to Lord’s, but seeing Soames spoils their outing and strengthens his sense that Jon must learn her history. Prompted by an imagined encounter with his father, he writes a detailed letter asking Jon to leave Fleur, and Irene approves its contents.

What happens

  1. Jolyon visits Lord’s with Irene, recalling cricket outings with his father and his son Jolly, but leaves after Soames passes.
  2. Exhausted at home, he seems to see his father urging him to confront the family’s painful past.
  3. After struggling for breath, Jolyon watches Irene through a window and thinks her concern for Jon eclipses her attachment to him.
  4. The next day, he writes Jon an account of Irene’s marriage to Soames, her suffering, and their own union.
  5. He asks Jon to end his attachment to Fleur, then hesitates over sending such intimate disclosures.
  6. Irene reads the letter, rejects any omissions, and agrees that Jon needs the full explanation.

What to notice

Irene insists that a vague account cannot explain her suffering. Her approval supports Jolyon’s decision to disclose details he finds almost unbearable to tell his son.
