This book will love readers of early twentieth century Russian fiction and symbolist writing. It suits anyone drawn to mysterious houses, strong heroines, sharp satire of officials and prose that glows with color.
Worum es in diesem Buch geht
What if a writer promised to take the poorest, grayest slice of life and turn it into a legend? That is the opening vow of The Created Legend, a novel by Fyodor Sologub. It is set in a Russian provincial town torn by strikes, police raids and Black Hundred gangs. Into that harsh world he sets a walled house, a chemist-poet and a colony of barefoot children.
Two sisters swim in the River Skorodyen and wonder about their strange neighbor. Their curiosity leads them through a gate, where they find music, laughter and pale, silent children who never play. You get a story that mixes plain reportage with fairy tale, nightmare and myth.

A poet vows to build a legend
The novel opens with a speaker who announces that he is a poet. He will take a piece of life that is coarse and poor and make a delightful legend from it. Whether life is dim or blazing, he will build around the enchanting and the beautiful.
On a bright midday the Flaming Dragon, Sologub's name for the harsh sun, looks down on the River Skorodyen. Two dark-haired sisters, Elisaveta and Elena, bathe there. A schoolboy hides in the bushes. Elisaveta guesses that someone is spying, and he crawls away in shame, because to the girls he is only a possibility, not a person.
Beauty is offered openly, yet the world around it is watching and wanting. The sisters begin to talk about Trirodov, a chemist whose house and colony of children stir rumors. The narrator keeps stepping forward to remind us that he shapes this world as he goes.
The takeaway is that the book asks you to watch life being turned into a story, and to enjoy the turning.
That’s 1 of 10 key points.
