The Consolation of Philosophy, Song IX summary
Song IX of 82 · Book 3: True and False Happiness Book III · 2 min to read the song
In Song IX, the speaker praises a motionless Maker whose inner goodness gives the world its form, balances its elements, and orders the movement of souls. The invocation turns from describing creation to asking for reason, clear sight of goodness, and release from earthly confusion through a vision of the divine.
What happens
- The speaker addresses the Maker as the unmoving source of movement and the ruler of time through reason.
- The Maker shapes the world after the perfect goodness within himself, rather than through any outside pressure.
- The Maker balances opposing elements and spreads a threefold soul through the whole.
- Lesser souls receive starry chariots and a law that directs their return to their source.
- The speaker asks for reason to rise toward goodness and for divine light to clear earthly mists.
