Worum es in diesem Buch geht

What would you do if you found a bag of gold that nobody could prove was yours? That question sits at the heart of The Coming Wave, or the Hidden Treasure of High Rock, a boys' adventure by Oliver Optic. He wrote it in 1874, and it is set on the fog-bound coast of Penobscot Bay in Maine.

A hurricane wrecks an old brig below a cliff called High Rock. From there the book follows Leopold Bennington, the sixteen-year-old son of a hotel keeper, and his loyal friend Stumpy.

Punkt 1 von 11

A hurricane wrecks the brig Waldo

The story begins at sea on a still August evening. The brig Waldo carries the cook Harvey Barth, a passenger calling himself J. Wallbridge, and Captain Josiah Barnwood. The sea is flat, yet the captain's barometer has dropped fast.

The storm comes from two sides at once. Sails rip to ribbons, and the crew fights to save the brig. Then lightning strikes the mainmast and runs down it. The bolt knocks the captain and several sailors senseless and smashes the wheel. Without a rudder, the old vessel rolls helplessly toward the rocks.

The survivors land on a narrow beach under a tall cliff. There the passenger kneels and buries a heavy bag of gold in the sand, and he marks the spot under an overhanging rock.

Disaster arrives fast, and what a person does with treasure in a crisis can matter long afterward.

That’s 1 of 11 key points.
