In Book 7, Aeneas reaches the Tiber, recognizes his destined home, and receives Latinus’s offer of land and marriage to Lavinia. Juno sends Alecto to inflame Amata, Turnus, and the countryside, turning the proposed alliance into bloodshed as Latinus withdraws and Italian armies gather against the Trojans.
What happens
- After Caieta’s funeral, the Trojans sail safely past Circe’s coast and enter the Tiber.
- Omens and Faunus’s oracle warn Latinus that Lavinia must marry a foreigner whose descendants gain vast power.
- Eating their bread plates confirms the Trojans’ destination, and Aeneas sends ambassadors while fortifying a settlement.
- Latinus welcomes the ambassadors, grants their requests, and proposes Aeneas as Lavinia’s husband.
- Alecto inflames Amata and Turnus, then turns Ascanius’s shooting of a tame stag into a deadly clash.
- Latinus refuses war and withdraws; Juno opens its sacred gates, and numerous Italian commanders assemble their forces.
