Für wen es gedacht ist

For readers who enjoy puzzles solved by close observation, and for anyone curious how dust, glass, tobacco and fingerprints can speak.

Worum es in diesem Buch geht

Imagine knowing everything before the detective knows anything. You watch a cheerful man stroll his garden on an October evening. You see him choose a victim and try to hide what he has done. Then you wait to see how a calm doctor reads what he left behind.

That is the bargain of The Adventures of Dr. Thorndyke, also called The Singing Bone. R. Austin Freeman, a doctor himself, wrote these five stories in the early twentieth century. He doubts that readers care most about who did it. He thinks they care more about how the truth is found. So in four tales the crime comes first, told in full, and you become a witness. You get a sharp eye for clues and a detective who earns every answer.

Punkt 1 von 7

The reader is told everything first

Freeman tests his idea in The Case of Oscar Brodski. The story opens with Silas Hickler, a round-faced man with a smile for everyone. His housekeeper thinks him a model of cheerfulness. In fact he lives by burglary and by dealing in diamonds that no one asks about.

On an October evening a nearsighted stranger comes along the dark road and asks the way to the station. Hickler invites him in for whisky and oatcakes. He knows the visitor at once as Oscar Brodski, a diamond merchant who carries his rough stones to Amsterdam himself.

What follows is a close study of how a thought grows. Hickler tells himself that violence is madness. Yet he closes the door and the key turns almost without his noticing. Freeman lets you watch a wish become a plan, step by tidy step.

The cover-up is just as detailed. Hickler scrubs the tablecloth and sweeps up the glass of a smashed tumbler and a pair of spectacles. He ties a bag and umbrella with string from his own string box and burns the dead man's hat. Each small act leaves something behind. Because you have seen them all, you can enjoy watching the detective find them.

When the reader knows everything, the interest moves from who to how.

That’s 1 of 7 key points.

Questions about Die Abenteuer des Dr. Thorndyke (Der singende Knochen)

What is The Adventures of Dr. Thorndyke about?

It collects five detective stories about Dr. John Thorndyke, a medical scientist and barrister, and his friend Dr. Jervis. Four tales show the crime first, and Thorndyke then works out the answer from small physical clues.

What does The Singing Bone mean?

The title comes from a German folk tale in which a bone made into a pipe sings out the truth about a murder. Jervis uses it to describe how a humble pipe helps solve the lighthouse case.

Who is Dr. Thorndyke and who is Jervis?

Thorndyke is a calm, observant lawyer and doctor who carries a small green laboratory case. Jervis is his younger medical colleague and friend, who narrates the second half of most of the tales.

What is an inverted detective story?

It is a mystery in which the reader sees the crime first and knows the criminal from the start. The interest shifts to how the detective works out the truth, one clue at a time.

Is it easy to read today?

The stories are short, clearly organized, and driven by lively scenes and dialogue. Each can be read on its own, and the clues are explained step by step, so a reader can follow every deduction.
