A parson's gossip gives a poor man a noble name
The book opens on a road near the village of Marlott. John Durbeyfield, a haggler, walks home unsteadily with an empty egg basket. Parson Tringham greets him as Sir John and says his family is the d'Urberville line, descended from a Norman knight.
The news is almost useless. The parson adds that the family is extinct in the male line and owns no land. John does not hear the warning. He hires a carriage and orders lamb's fry for supper as a knight should.
Meanwhile the women of Marlott hold their yearly May Day club walk in white dresses. Tess goes hot with shame when her father rolls past singing about his vault and his ancestors. Her mother Joan decides that a rich lady named d'Urberville must be a relation who will help Tess find a husband. Vanity is a danger to those who must live inside it.
That’s 1 of 11 key points.

Questions about Tess of the d'Urbervilles: A Pure Woman
What is Tess of the d'Urbervilles about?
It follows Tess Durbeyfield, a poor country girl whose father learns he descends from a noble family. That news draws her toward a rich namesake and later toward a man she loves, and it shapes her fate.
Who are the main characters in Tess of the d'Urbervilles?
Tess is the heroine. Alec d'Urberville is the wealthy man who pursues her, and Angel Clare is the clergyman's son she loves. Her parents, John and Joan Durbeyfield, and her sister 'Liza-Lu also play parts.
When was Tess of the d'Urbervilles written, and is it a true story?
Thomas Hardy published it in 1891, after magazine versions. Though the story is fictional, Hardy described it as an effort to shape real events from Wessex life into a work of art.
What does the subtitle A Pure Woman mean?
Hardy added it at the last minute as his honest judgment of Tess's character. He meant purity in the sense of nature and spirit, not only the narrow meaning given by social convention, and he expected no dispute.
What is the main message of Tess of the d'Urbervilles?
Hardy shows a good woman judged unfairly by a society that blames her for what was done to her. He also shows how chance, class and custom shape a life more than a person's own choices.
