In Swann's Way, Swann meets the Princesse des Laumes at Mme. de Saint-Euverte’s concert, where conversation exposes social rivalry, prejudice, and carefully performed politeness. He longs to leave and check for a message, but Vinteuil’s sonata suddenly brings back memories of the time when Odette loves him.
What happens
- Chopin’s music moves Mme. de Cambremer and the Princesse des Laumes, while Mme. de Gallardon seeks her cousin’s attention.
- The Princess answers Mme. de Gallardon’s prejudice against Swann with indifference and turns an insult against her.
- A young Mme. de Cambremer adjusts a threatening candle, and the Princess mocks the guests while talking with General de Froberville.
- Swann exchanges jokes with the Princess, but her invitation to Guermantes touches his unhappiness rather than relieving it.
- Swann declines another party to avoid missing a message, but the General’s request for an introduction delays his departure.
- Trapped during another piece, Swann hears Vinteuil’s familiar phrase and involuntarily relives his happiness with Odette.
