Worum es in diesem Buch geht

What happens when a prince is whipped across the face by a dwarf, a kitchen boy is sent to rescue a lady, and a maiden guards a stranger's shield? You meet all three in this little book of King Arthur's knights.

Mary Macgregor retold these tales for young readers from the book of Sir Thomas Malory, who gathered many old Welsh tales about Arthur's court. Let us begin with Geraint and a morning hunt that Queen Guinevere sleeps through.

A whipped cheek leads Geraint to Enid

The first tale opens on a morning when Queen Guinevere oversleeps and misses the royal hunt. She rides to a grassy hill with her little maid to watch the hunters pass, and Prince Geraint joins her. A lady, a knight and a dwarf come out of the forest, and the Queen wants to know the knight's name.

The dwarf strikes the maid with his whip, and when Geraint goes to ask for himself, the dwarf whips him across the cheek. Geraint sees how small the dwarf is and holds back. He asks the Queen for leave to follow the knight and make him apologize.

Geraint trails the riders to a white fortress, but the town is full for the Sparrow-hawk's tournament. The prince is sent to old Earl Yniol, who lives in a half-ruined castle. There he meets the Earl's daughter Enid in a faded silk gown. He asks to fight as her knight and to marry her if he wins. In the Earl's rusty armor he still looks like a prince, and he defeats the Sparrow-hawk, the Earl's own nephew.

Marriage follows, but gossip brings trouble. Geraint loves Enid so much that he forgets his fields and his poor people, and the country begins to jeer. Enid cannot find the courage to tell him. He finds her weeping, guesses wrongly, and orders her to ride ahead in silence.

Love that makes a man neglect his duty hurts the one he loves.

That’s 1 of 8 key points.
