In Thomas Trevelyan, the speaker recalls reading Ovid’s account of Itys’s murder and the transformations of Philomela and Procne, finding its meaning through his own experience. He turns the myth into a claim that people unknowingly destroy love’s offspring and become either singers or birds facing bleak weather.

- The gods change Philomela into a nightingale and Procne into a swallow.
- Trevelyan praises ancient Greek poets and artists for preserving wisdom that sharpens his understanding in Spoon River.
- Experience teaches him to connect the myth’s violence and birds with the ways people destroy love and express themselves.
