Für wen es gedacht ist

You will enjoy this book if you love Scottish folk songs, village life, fiddle music, mining history, or the voices of ordinary working people in the First World War era.

Worum es in diesem Buch geht

What does a lead miner do with a pencil after a shift underground? Thomas Grierson Gracie, born in Wanlockhead in 1861, answers with a book of songs and rhymes about his own glen.

He calls himself a self-taught man who writes for his own kind, and he plays the fiddle, so many pieces name a tune. Inside you meet fishing trips, a wedding, pony drivers, soldiers and a young woman caught in a snowstorm.

A lead miner finds his voice in war

Gracie opens the book with a plain note about his life. He was born in Wanlockhead in 1861, one of ten children.

As a boy he loved the glens and hills and hated the schoolroom. At thirteen he washed lead for fivepence a day. After five years he went underground, and later he qualified as a lead miner. He also spent six years in coal mines, and he speaks warmly of coal miners. Beneath a rough exterior, he says, they are true to the core.

Music runs beside the work. He taught himself composition and harmony, and the violin is his favorite. Playing at concerts, balls and fairs kept his children fed and clothed when a miner's wage fell short.

He began to write rhymes only when the Great War broke out. He does not claim to be a poet, and he warns that cultured readers will find the verse crude. He asks only that a piece raise a smile, a laugh or a tear, or make people a little kinder.

The book is the honest voice of a working man who writes to cheer his own community.

That’s 1 of 8 key points.
