Für wen es gedacht ist

This book suits readers who love browsing: lovers of Chinese history and court life, collectors of anecdotes and strange tales, and students of poetry and painting.

Worum es in diesem Buch geht

What happens when a court handbook, a ghost story and a poem share one page? Random Notes from North of the Pond, known in Chinese as Chi Bei Ou Tan, answers that question. Wang Shizhen, who died in 1711, gathered hundreds of short entries into twenty-six chapters. They are the jottings of a working official in Beijing during the Kangxi reign.

Wang was a poet and a high servant of the throne. He wrote in his own voice, with no plot and no single argument. You get the inside of a Qing court, honest magistrates, loyal widows, a sharp critic of poems and paintings, and a collector of strange tales.

Punkt 1 von 10

Rank, seat and ceremony ruled the court

The opening chapters read like a rulebook written by someone who lived inside it. Wang records who sat where, who rode in a sedan chair, and which office ranked above which. In 1667 the commander of the imperial guard petitioned to ride in a covered chair like the ministers. The emperor agreed, and a military man was treated as a civil equal.

Small points mattered because they showed status. At great audiences the scholars of the Hanlin Academy sat above officers of higher rank, because the seating followed a different logic from the pay scale. Wang finds such puzzles fascinating and says so.

He is also a critic of his own system. He complains that ranks and privileges were inconsistent and that worthy men were denied honors. His tone is that of a colleague who loves the institution and wants it to make sense.

The takeaway is that in this court, a seat or a title was a statement about power.

That’s 1 of 10 key points.
