In Canto 13, Isabella tells Orlando how a planned escape with Zerbino leads to betrayal and captivity, and Orlando kills her captors and takes her away. Melissa guides Bradamante toward Ruggiero and warns her against Atlante’s illusions, but Bradamante trusts what she sees and enters the enchanted palace.
What happens
- Isabella describes her love for Zerbino, her secret departure with Odorico, and the storm that wrecks their ship.
- Odorico attacks Corebo and tries to force Isabella; a bandit crowd interrupts him but imprisons her for sale.
- Orlando kills the bandits, leaves with Isabella at dawn, and encounters a captive knight after days of travel.
- Melissa explains Atlante’s trap to Bradamante and describes the distinguished women she predicts among her descendants and their family connections.
- Bradamante disregards Melissa’s warning when an apparent Ruggiero needs help, and she becomes trapped inside the palace.
