Notes from the Underground, Part II summary

Part II of 22 · Part 1: Underground · 5 min to read the part

In II, the narrator calls excessive consciousness an illness and describes finding secret pleasure in shame, degradation, and despair, while claiming that heightened awareness prevents change. He imagines receiving a slap and explains why neither forgiveness nor revenge seems possible, making his inability to decide on action the central problem.

What happens

  1. The narrator says he cannot even become an insect and argues that ordinary life needs much less consciousness than he possesses.
  2. He describes doing degrading things precisely when his awareness of goodness is strongest.
  3. Private self-torment over his actions turns into enjoyment, which he connects with feeling trapped in his own character.
  4. He argues that excessive consciousness produces inertia, leaving a person unable to change or act.
  5. Imagining a slap, he explains how pride, blame, and appeals to natural laws prevent both forgiveness and revenge.
