Part 1, Part I of 22 · Part 1: Underground · 19 min to read the part

In I, the narrator describes his lonely life at twenty-four, his troubled dealings with fellow clerks, and his lasting resentment toward an officer who moves him aside. After failed attempts at retaliation and careful preparations, he deliberately bumps shoulders with the officer and treats this encounter as proof of social equality.

What happens

  1. The narrator avoids his colleagues, fears their judgment, and alternates between despising them and feeling inferior to them.
  2. He describes a brief friendship with his colleagues and argues that Russian romantics combine cherished ideals with practical self-interest.
  3. Reading and secret nightlife offer uneasy escape, until an officer silently moves him aside in a tavern.
  4. He investigates the officer, submits an unsuccessful satirical story, and writes but does not send a challenge.
  5. He buys respectable clothes, borrowing from Anton Antonitch Syetotchkin, and repeatedly fails to confront the officer on the Nevsky.
  6. He finally refuses to yield, bumps the officer shoulder to shoulder, and returns home feeling triumphant.
