The Odyssey

The Odyssey is an ancient Greek epic poem attributed to Homer, about Odysseus’s return home after the Trojan War. Its adventures with monsters and gods lead to a struggle to reclaim his household, making it a lasting story of endurance, loyalty, and belonging.

What The Odyssey contains

The household under threat

While Odysseus is absent, men seeking to marry his wife Penelope consume his household’s supplies. His son Telemachus sets out to seek news of him.

In The Odyssey, Penelope delays choosing a husband by weaving a burial cloth during the day and secretly undoing her work at night.

In The Odyssey by Homer

The Cyclops and the escape

Odysseus and his companions become trapped in the cave of Polyphemus, a one-eyed giant. Their escape depends on cunning, but Odysseus’s pride brings further danger.

In The Odyssey, Odysseus blinds Polyphemus, then gets his surviving companions out beneath the giant’s sheep. Once aboard his ship, he reveals his identity, allowing Polyphemus to call on Poseidon against him.

The Sirens and other dangers

Odysseus faces temptations and deadly passages at sea. Survival often depends on following warnings and accepting painful limits.

In The Odyssey, Odysseus blocks his companions’ ears with wax and has himself bound to the mast. He can hear the Sirens without steering the ship towards them.

The return to Ithaca

Odysseus reaches home in disguise and tests whom he can trust. He defeats Penelope’s suitors and must then establish his identity to her.

In The Odyssey, Penelope tests Odysseus by ordering their bed to be moved. His knowledge that it was built around a living olive tree helps convince her that he is truly her husband.

Is The Odyssey a sequel to The Iliad?

The Odyssey follows the Trojan War, so it can be read after The Iliad, but it tells a separate story. The Iliad focuses on Achilles’s anger during the war; The Odyssey follows Odysseus’s return and the troubles awaiting him at home.

Does The Odyssey tell its story in order?

The Odyssey does not tell all its events in time order. It begins while Odysseus is still away and his household is under threat. Later, he recounts earlier adventures to his hosts, before the poem follows his return to Ithaca.
