Chapter 37 of 88 · Book 4: Three Love Problems · 33 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 37, Will Ladislaw chooses to remain near Dorothea through Mr. Brooke’s newspaper work, despite Edward Casaubon’s demand that he refuse the position. Dorothea asks her husband to give Will a larger share of his property, but her appeal provokes anger, while Will’s refusal to submit strengthens Casaubon’s determination to oppose him.

What happens

  1. Mr. Brooke’s purchase of the Pioneer and plans for Reform draw criticism, especially about his neglected estate.
  2. Will uses a sketching visit to approach Dorothea, and rain brings them together privately in the library.
  3. Will describes his family’s hardships, and Dorothea urges sympathy for Casaubon before welcoming Will’s proposed employment nearby.
  4. Casaubon privately writes forbidding Will to accept the position and threatening to exclude him from his house.
  5. Dorothea proposes giving Will substantial property, but Casaubon angrily rejects her interference and questions their private conversation.
  6. Will refuses Casaubon’s veto, and Casaubon remains publicly silent while considering further ways to obstruct him.
