You will enjoy this if you like cozy fireside company, stories told within stories, Victorian London by lamplight, and the cheerful voices of Mr. Pickwick and the Wellers.
Worum es in diesem Buch geht
Imagine a crooked little man in an old London house, a carved clock ticking in the corner, and a fire that crackles at midnight. Once a week, four friends gather there, read stories aloud, and tuck the pages back into the clock case.
That is the scene at the heart of Master Humphrey's Clock, which Charles Dickens published in weekly parts in 1840 and 1841. The clock gives up its papers one by one. You get ghostly tales, a dark prison confession, comic scenes with Mr. Pickwick and the Wellers, and a night portrait of London.

A lonely man makes his clock a friend
Master Humphrey opens the book by telling readers they must never learn where he lives. He is a solitary old man in a shady suburb of London, in a house full of echoes and low, crooked beams. He wants to be known by his habits and his feelings and not by his address.
The street once feared him. People called him a spy, a conjurer, even a monster. Mothers snatched up their babies when he walked by. He answered with patience and kindness, and slowly the scowls turned into nods and curtsies.
He tells you plainly that he is a crippled, crooked man. As a child, he names an angel in his mother's picture for each playmate. When he cannot choose one for himself, he sees the old sorrow in her gentle face and understands at last. He tells this without bitterness, and it explains why he loves lifeless things as if they were friends.
Chief among them is his clock, a tall oak case, richly carved, which stood on the stairs of his boyhood home. Its face, reddened by the fire, seems to look at him kindly.
A lonely heart can build a home from small, faithful things.
That’s 1 of 8 key points.
