Für wen es gedacht ist

This book will delight readers who love ancient poetry, questions about death and justice, the meeting of Jewish faith and Greek thought, and the roots of Christian ideas about wisdom.

Worum es in diesem Buch geht

Picture a king who admits that he was born crying, just like every other baby. He says no ruler has ever had a different start in life. Then he says he prayed, and the spirit of wisdom came to him.

That king is Solomon, or rather a writer who speaks in his voice. The Wisdom of Solomon was written in Greek, most likely in Alexandria, by a Jewish author whose name is not known. It asks why the wicked seem to win and what happens to a good person who dies young. Here you meet a bold argument about death, a love song to Wisdom, and a retelling of the Exodus.

A Jewish thinker writes in Solomon's voice

The Wisdom of Solomon comes from a world where two cultures met. Educated Jews in Alexandria knew Greek philosophy well, and the Hebrew scriptures had already been translated into Greek.

The author takes the voice of Solomon, the king known across the ancient world for his wisdom. This gives his words royal weight, and it lets him speak directly to kings and judges. The persona is a literary device, as ancient writers often spoke through famous figures.

The pressure on his readers was real. Some young Jews were tempted to drop their faith in order to rise in Greek society. Behind them stood the memory of persecution under Antiochus IV, when the Temple was desecrated and those who clung to the Torah were tortured. That left a sharp question. Where is the justice God promised?

The author answers with confidence. He uses the Greek list of four virtues, which are prudence, justice, courage and temperance. Yet his heart stays with the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, a God who is close and who acts in history.

Faith and learning can speak to each other without one swallowing the other.

That’s 1 of 8 key points.
