You will enjoy this if you like early Christian stories about the apostles, tales of miracles and spiritual contest, or the ways traditions about Jesus's followers grew beyond the New Testament.
Worum es in diesem Buch geht
Picture an apostle alone on a bare mountain, forty days into a fast, living on fruit that drops when the wind stirs the branches. A beautiful child walks up and greets him with peace. Matthew does not know the visitor. He apologizes that he has no bread, no oil and not even water to wash the child's feet.
This is the Martyrdom of Matthew, an anonymous Christian narrative about the last mission of Matthew the tax collector, one of the Twelve. The canonical books say almost nothing about what became of him, so stories like this one rose to answer the questions believers kept asking. A modern introduction explains the apocryphal writings and the Parthian world of the east. Then you follow Matthew into the city of Myrna, where a bishop, a king and a demon wait, and see what one planted stick can do.

A heavenly child finds Matthew fasting alone
The story opens on a mountain, where Matthew the apostle is praying. He wears his tunic and apostolic robes and goes without sandals. He is finishing a fast of forty days, and his only food is whatever fruit falls when the wind moves the branches.
Jesus appears in the form of a child who sings in paradise and greets Matthew with peace. Matthew does not recognize him. He answers with warm courtesy and a host's worry. He has no bread, no oil in a jar, and no water to wash the boy's feet. Even the winds are still, so nothing drops from the trees.
The child gently corrects his idea of hospitality. Good conversation is better than a calf, he says, and a cheerful face is better than a feast. Then he names himself through a run of titles. He is the Comforter, the power of the powers above, the crown of virgins, the defender of children and the foundation of the Church. He tells Matthew to be strong and take courage.
Matthew answers with joy, for the child's face shines brighter than lightning. He asks where wicked Herod is now. The child says Herod lives in Hades, in unquenchable fire, because he slaughtered three thousand children while hunting the child Jesus.
The apostle has nothing to set on a table, yet he gives his welcome and his humility. In return he receives words of life from the Lord himself. Real hospitality is measured by kindness and not by what stands on the table.
That’s 1 of 7 key points.

What is the Martyrdom of Matthew about?
It tells of the apostle Matthew receiving a rod from a heavenly child on a mountain and taking it to Myrna, where a king turns against him.
Is the Martyrdom of Matthew in the Bible?
No. It belongs to the apocryphal acts of the apostles, which many early Christians read but which were not gathered into most Bibles. The word apocryphal means hidden or set apart, not false.

Is the Martyrdom of Matthew a true story?
This ancient narrative tells the traditional story of Matthew's mission and martyrdom. Scholars read such texts as witnesses to early Christian memory, faith and courage, and traditions about Matthew's death differ.
