Readers fascinated by early Christians, Jesus and his Jewish roots, and traditions beyond the four Gospels will love this. It suits anyone who enjoys ancient fragments and the puzzle of how religious stories grow.
Worum es in diesem Buch geht
Picture a Jesus who says that his mother is the Holy Spirit, and that she took him by a single hair and carried him to Mount Tabor. Those words do not stand in Matthew, Mark, Luke or John. They come from the Gospel of the Hebrews, a text that no one has read as a whole for about fifteen hundred years.
This lost gospel was treasured by Jewish followers of Jesus and quoted by church fathers. No author is named. Ten short passages survive, each saved because a writer quoted it. You get a vivid look at an early Christianity that kept its Jewish roots.

A gospel born among Jewish followers of Jesus
The Gospel of the Hebrews comes from the first communities who followed Jesus, and those communities were Jewish. They did not build a new religion from scratch. They believed the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob had acted in the life and death of a Galilean teacher.
First century Jewish life was full of variety. There were Pharisees and Sadducees, Essenes and Zealots, mystics and legal experts. The followers of Jesus drew on the Hebrew scriptures and the hopes they already had. So they called Jesus the Messiah, the Son of Man and the Wisdom of God. Later writers named several Jewish Christian groups, among them Ebionites, Nazarenes and Elkasaites.
Then the ground shifted. After the destruction of the Temple in 70 CE, the wider Jewish community drew its boundaries more tightly and left out people who believed in Jesus. The growing church moved toward Greek flavoured teaching and away from Jewish law. Squeezed from two sides, Jewish Christian communities shrank and their books were copied less and less.
This gospel makes sense only as the voice of Jewish followers of Jesus who stood between two worlds.
That’s 1 of 8 key points.

The full book, start to finish.Questions about The Gospel of the Hebrews
What is the Gospel of the Hebrews?
It is a lost gospel used by Jewish Christians, followers of Jesus who kept Jewish practice. No full copy survives. We know it from short quotations in the writings of church fathers such as Clement, Origen, Eusebius and Jerome.
Why is the Gospel of the Hebrews not in the Bible?
Early church writers like Eusebius placed it outside the books accepted by all. Some communities used it, but the growing mainstream church did not give it the same standing as the Gospels that became the New Testament.
Why does Jesus call the Holy Spirit his mother?
In Hebrew the word for spirit, ruach, is feminine. A community thinking in Hebrew would naturally speak of the Spirit as she, so the fragment calls the Spirit his Mother. It reflects the grammar and images of that language.
Is the Gospel of the Hebrews the same as the Gospel of the Nazarenes?
Scholars disagree. Some think the quotations tied to the Hebrews, the Nazarenes and the Ebionites come from one text. Others see two or three related gospels, each linked to a different Jewish Christian community.
What is the main message of the Gospel of the Hebrews fragments?
The fragments stress spiritual seeking, the closeness of the Holy Spirit, the physical reality of the risen Lord, and love for one's brother. They show an early Jewish way of remembering Jesus.
